Prizes

How a scan wins

Every scan first tries for a prize. Only a scan that doesn't win shows one of your other items (picked by rarity and weight, as usual) or your No win screen.

  1. A visitor who already won on this code today sees the same prize again: a refresh never tries twice.
  2. One try every 2 hours, one win per code: a visitor who tried less than 2 hours ago, or who has already won on this code, doesn't try. Their scan shows your items as usual, and it doesn't count toward an "every Nth scan" prize.
  3. 12 hours between wins: after winning, a visitor doesn't try for a prize on any of your codes for 12 hours.
  4. Turns come first: an "every Nth scan" prize whose turn has come, or a "spread over a period" prize with one waiting, is won.
  5. Otherwise there's one roll over the percentage and happy-hour prizes, and their chances add up. With a 5% coffee and a 10% discount, 15% of scans win something and 85% don't. If they add up to more than 100%, they share 100%.

A scan wins at most one prize. A prize that's off, outside its schedule or with none left takes no part; if no prize can be won, scans work as if there were none.

Fair play

The 2-hour gap, the one win per code and the 12 hours between wins keep people from rescanning until they win. A phone is recognised by a small cookie for that code, within the same day by the anonymous daily visitor code, and for 12 hours by an anonymous 12-hour visitor code (see the Privacy policy). Someone who clears their cookies can try again from the next day: the rules slow people down, they can't stop a determined one. Your own test scans are never limited.

Add a prize

On the code's Items page, choose Prize (or Add a prize on the Prizes page). Give it a name, then:

  • Prizes: how many can win, or your own codes, one per line (for example discount codes from you or a sponsor; up to 1000). Each winner gets one, and each code goes to exactly one person, even when hundreds scan at the same moment. When they run out, the prize stops.
  • How it's won: one of the four ways below.
  • Design and Schedule.

Four ways to win

  • A percentage of scans: for example 5% (about 1 in 20). Each scan has that chance.
  • Every Nth scan: for example every 50th scan of this QR code wins. Each phone counts at most once every 12 hours, so rescanning doesn't bring the turn closer.
  • Spread over a period: the prizes are released evenly between a start and an end. With 50 over 7 days, one becomes available about every 3½ hours and the next scan after that wins it. A prize nobody has won yet waits for the next scan, so none are lost.
  • Happy hours: a normal chance and a higher one on the days and times you choose, for example 2% normally and 10% Monday to Friday, 17:00–19:00. Times are in your time zone (the editor shows which); a window like 22:00–02:00 crosses midnight.

Prizes on the same code can each use a different way.

Design

Preview at the top opens the saved prize with a sample code; nothing is given or counted. Below it, the design comes in four groups:

  • Look: the template (Ticket, Coupon, Gift box or Scratch card, where visitors tap to reveal the code), the colors (the QR code's look, or your own), an icon, a picture (upload one or pick one of your images; it replaces the icon), and confetti when someone wins.
  • Text: the headline ("You won!" if you leave it empty) and the message.
  • Button (optional): a label and a link; it shows only when both are filled in. Put {code} in the link and it's replaced by the won code, for example https://shop.example/redeem?code={code}.
  • Code and validity: show the code as a QR code too, for scanning at a till, and valid until a date or for a number of days after winning (if both are set, the days count). This is how long the winner can use the prize; it's printed on the prize card and doesn't change who can win. When the prize can be won is set in Schedule.

Testing your code: while you're signed in, scanning or opening your own QR code rolls for prizes just like for visitors, but nothing is given away or counted, and every refresh rolls again. A note at the top says so. To see it as a visitor, sign out or use a private window.

While you're live

When one of your channels is live, the stream always shows. A win adds the prize under the stream; no win adds nothing.

Keeping track

The item list shows each prize's chance and how many are left, for example "5% (about 1 in 20) · 12 of 50 left", or "All given". The QR code's Prizes page shows every prize with how it's won, how many were given and how many are left; prizes won and No win screens over 7, 30 or 90 days; the share of scans that won; the chance right now; and the latest wins with their codes. Your own test scans aren't counted.
